Escalator issues. In a local mall, I observed a man teaching his wife to use an escalator for apparently the first time. After about ten false starts, she finally got both feet on the moving step, and the twenty people waiting behind her could finally descend.
Lullaby of Lucknow. I'm going to zoom out for this one so you get the full picture. Six month old baby, held against his mother's side with one arm. Mother is sitting on the back of the motor scooter which father is driving. It is a main Lucknow road during evening rush hour. The baby is fast asleep.
Shaving-walla. On the way to school, saw a boy about nine or ten giving a shave to a middle aged man beneath a little scrap of awning. Complete with straight razor and shaving cream brush. Really wanted a photo of that one.
Transporting transportation. Saw a cycle rickshaw whose fare was a little unusual...it was a motor scooter.
Fascinated children. If adults think we westerners look strange, children must think we're something out of a myth. Adults will surreptitiously take photos of us. Children will walk up to us and stare us unblinkingly in the face. One little boy was particularly fascinated by my friend Dana. His father eventually brought him over and asked if Dana would shake his hand. Dana obliged, much to the little boy's fascination.
Blood red corners. As my housemate Anthony put it, most buildings in Lucknow looked like they filmed The Shining there last week. Men chew pan, a red leaf, almost incessantly and spit it in the corner as they pass by. Their teeth are often stained red. The ground looks like someone slaughtered a goat. Although maybe they did that, too....
English translate problem. I'm sure to see more, since Nepal was full of them, but so far I've seen a t-shirt that said I enjoy to party, and a sign that advertised English Cource taught here. Also a Coca-Cola sign read "Food tastes better with crazy balls." Still not sure exactly what was intended by that...
